Jazmine McKinney is a senior in the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health, where she is completing the concentration in health planning and administration.

What are your general impressions of the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health and your own studies?

KCH really cares about its students. Classes are interesting and fun, and the administration provides assistance that some of my friends are not fortunate to receive in other majors. I believe that the Department of Kinesiology and Community Health is just as dynamic as the field they are teaching. With new technologies, laws and bills being passed, and evolving research in both kinesiology and community health, the department does an amazing job of making sure we are well-rounded and prepared for any of the numerous career paths available to us.

What has been your best/most interesting/most beneficial experience at the U of I?

My most beneficial experience is being a member of the Mannie L. Jackson Illinois Academic Enrichment and Leadership Program, or I-LEAP. I-LEAP has helped me in so many ways, from making a smooth transition from high school to college to getting better grades to joining clubs and extracurricular activities that will help me in the future. Without the help of I-LEAP director Sheri Shaw and the program, these last three years would have been a lot more difficult.

What extracurricular activities and student organizations have you been involved with?

In addition to I-LEAP, I have involved with the Illini Union Board Cross-Cultural Committee, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, the Pre-Physical Therapy Club, 100 Strong, and Chi Alpha Epsilon Honors Fraternity, and I serve as the Community Service Chair for Women of Color.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I'm not sure where, but I plan on attending graduate school to complete a doctorate in physical therapy. I want to work with children who have disabilities.

What do you like to do for fun?

I think every college student’s favorite thing to do is sleep, but when I’m not sleeping, I like to perform spoken word poetry, listen to music, and take random road trips.
